September 9th 2015 - rock house

September 9th 2015 - rock house

A few weeks back my lil man found 2 leprechauns in a charity shop.  They were salt & pepper pots but he asked if he could have them for his fairy garden.  I bought them and put glue in the holes, touched up the bit that was chipped with nail varnish and off he went with them to the garden.

I didn't think much more about them but last week he said to me that his leprechauns needed a house as the fairies and gnomes all have  houses.  I asked him what sort he wanted and he said made from rock like some of those outside but must be green and have a rainbow on it as leprechauns are found near rainbows.

I have an assortment of rocks in the garden that we have found as we cleared it etc so I foun 1 that was sort of rock house shaped and set about drawing bits on it - windows and doors and flowers, a roof and a rainbow on the back.  I then set about painting it.  It looks really good and lil man is pleased with it.  He asked me to put silver sparkle nail varnish over the rainbow so it looks magical.  So out came the nail varnish again (1 day I will do a post on my many uses of nail varnish lol), and I i it.  All I need to do is varnish it.

I will add a photo during day light so it looks better.

July 26th 2015 - rock pet

July 26th 2015 - rock pet

Yesterday when we went to the rock pool beach lil man picked up a rock and said was bringing it home to make a rock pet.  We didn't get as far as doing it yesterday so we have made it this morning.

I have had to use UHU glue as pva wasn't strong enough.  We have put googly eyes on it,

Then I glued a small feather to a piece of pipe cleaner and glued it into the crack in the stone as a tail.

Lil man then found a camo button and asked for that to be stuck to its back.

He then asked me to put on some diamantes and he has called his rock pet "Diamond".

We have talked about how he needs to look after his "pet" and come up with some "rules".  Here they are:

* "pet rocks" are lazy and do no not need exercise and they don't like to be thrown at anyone or anything.

* "pet rocks" are not known to eat food and can survive without any.  Nor do they need any water to drink.

* "pet rocks" are clean pets and don't need baths or to go swimming, infact they don't need to go anywhere near water as they will sink straight away.

* "pet rocks" are already trained they know how to "sit", "stay" and "play dead", they don't know how to come when called and wont answer to it's name.

* "pet rocks" don't need to be brushed as they have no fur or feathers.

* "pet rocks" can be left unattended for long times and will not cause problems or make a mess.

We hope you can find a relative of Diamond and make your own rock pet and have fun like we are.

July 25th 2015 - Parton

July 25th 2015 - Parton

I was on a mission today, I needed 60 smooth, small pale coloured rocks for a kids craft activity linked to Badger Day Camp.  They are going to make noughts & crosses games from lolly sticks and small stones of which they can decorate, they will then be going into a fabric pencil case that they can also decorate.  There is no way I am paying for rocks!

10mins drive down the road is Parton Beach, it is 98% rocks and rock pools and 2% sand.  Now you would think with this information that I would be able to find what I was looking for very easily - errrr no!  There are rocks every where but trying to find those that matched my criteria was not easy.

Hubby and the 3 boys went off to the rock pools and the edge of the sea and were trying to see what they could find - a few dead crabs, a dead seagull (decomposing), a pair of mens trousers, some shrimps and a few fish!  And they left me collecting rocks and shells.

Whilst I was looking for the smooth rocks I found some that had lots of shiny/sparkly bits in that seem to be a type of crystal, there was a lot of this as well, in various shapes, sizes and colours.  I brought a few pieces home with me, the only 1 I can identify is the red cornelian.

My youngest son decided  that he wanted to bring a rock home and turn it into a rock pet, we are going to glue eyes on it.

March 16th 2015 - Vegetable markers

March 16th 2015 - Vegetable markers

With lil man trying to grow his own vegetables he needs to have markers of some sort so we can tell what he has growing (hopefully) where.

I didn't think that the plastic ones you write on would be very good with high winds and cats, so I looed on pinterest for ideas and found these vegetable markers made from stones with the image draw/painted on them and then varnished - much more sturdy.  So I set about making him some, so far we have carrots, potatoes and sweetcorn markers made (see below) and I need to make garlic, raspberries and blueberries.  These are not all in his big planter but in smaller pots as well.

February 15th 2015 - Parton Rock pools

February 15th 2015 - Parton Rock pools

Today's pin is from the places I want to go to board, and was Parton.  This is a place that we visit regularly as its only a couple of miles up the road from where we live.  It is a sort of cove area on the coast and the beach is all rocks from tiny pebbles upto huge boulders.  Some of these huge boulders have been worn away by the sea and  therefore the sea gathers in them making rock pools.

My boys love going there to see if we can find anything in the rock pools, and usually 1 of them ends up wet for whatever reason - falling into a rock pool, walking in the sea, standing in a rock pool, being splashed by his brother etc.  Today we were lucky no-one got wet but we wern't there very long as my eldest decided to be stupid and climb the wall that has a train track above it!!!

We did collect some shells whilst we were there but I don't think there is enough for the lady at the community centre's summer craft session.  So will have to get some more on another visit.

Here are a few pics taken at parton last year:
