May 12th 2015 - Tried it but didnt like it!

May 12th 2015 - Tried it but didn't like it

A few weeks ago I was sent a free packet of lime rice and quinoa.  Sounded and looked quite nice.  There was a receipe idea on the back to have it with salmon.  So we decided that we would try it.  We bought some salmon today and cooked the rice stuff and salmon.  And served it.

Well all I can say on it was the quinoa looked like frogspawn, my hubby thought it looked like loads of eyes!  Not a good start.  The lime flavour with the rice and salmon went well together and is something I will try again, BUT it will be without the quinoa!  I didn't like the taste or texture.  I can safely say I have tried it but didn't like it.

May 9th 2015 - Sock heat bag

May 9th 2015 - Sock heat bag

My knee is causing me lots of pain at the moment, and I have no idea why as I haven't done anything.  The most annoying thing is that I can't find my microwave heat bag to put on it. So I went on pinterest to see if I could how to make one.

I found a pin about making a a heat bag from a pair of socks and some rice.  I followed the instructions and filled 1 of the socks with rice, tied a knot in it, placed it inside the other sock and then heated it in the microwave, the pin says for 1minute 40seconds, but after 1minute it was already boiling hot, not sure if my microwave was higher power etc.

But it worked as a heat bag, although the rice doesn't stay as hot for as long as my wheat bag.  But until I can find it this will work as a short term one.

April 13th 2015 - R.I.C.E

April 13th 2015 - R.I.C.E

R.I.C.E - not the stuff you eat but Rest Ice Compression Elevation in a first aid sense.  When I slipped in the garden at the weekend trying to get away from a wasp I landed on my wrist!  Didn't think much of it until my wrist and hand started to swell so I removed my rings.

I was still in pain with it this morning although I can move it so went up A&E to get it checked.  The nurse prodded n poked it (as they do) and I had pains shooting up my arm and into my hand, so I got sent for an xray.  Had a long wait in xray and then back to A&E.

The doctor again prodded and poked, and said my wrist isn't broken that they can see at the moment, but there is a fracture showing on my scaphoid (bone at base of thumb) - my thumb doesn't hurt though and I broke that years ago.  As i'm not in pain with it they are leaving it for now.  They believe that I have sprained my wrist over the part that hurts and is swollen and told me to use R.I.C.E as mentioned above along with pain killers.  If i'm still in pain in a few days to go and see my GP to be referred back to A&E.

Rainbow rice and pancake day

About 2years ago I found a post on the net about Rainbow rice.  I copied it and made some for my son.  I also added lentils and split peas and black beans to it.  He loved playing with his diggers in it.  A few days ago he added water to it and it all went mushy and mouldy and I had to throw it all out.

I've spent today re-making it (well some of it as hadn't got many food colouring in the cupboard).  He now has red (more like pink), purple, plain rice and lentils, split peas and red beans all in the tub.  I will get some more food colouring and make him some blue rice and orange and some black beans when I can get to tesco.

It's very simple to make, you need the following:
rice (dry not cooked)
food colouring
white vinegar
cooking trays

place the rice on the cooking tray (I use one bag per colour as we have big tub to keep it in), add a few drops of food colouring (more makes darker/brighter colours) and 2 capfuls of white vinegar, mix really well so that all the rice becomes covered in the food colouring.  Once it's all mixed together you need to re-dry it, so place in oven on low heat for about 5minutes or out in the sun for about 20minutes.  It is advisable to mix it round the baking tray half way through so that it all gets dried.  Once it's dried and cooled add to a plastic tub and mix all the colours together, it looks like a rainbow!  It lasts ages as long as doesnt get wet.  My son has had hours of fun with it.

Also today I have made 2 batches of pancake batter ready for tea.  I'm sure it will be enough but then again knowing my boys it may not be and I will have to make even more!!!  Toppings for the pancakes are lemon & sugar, golden syrup, and chocolate spread.
